The theme for the 2012 Organic Okanagan Festival is “Love the Apple – NO GMO”. A small BC company called Okanagan Specialty Fruits has submitted a request to Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for approval of a genetically modified (GM) “non-browning” apple. Contamination from GM apples threatens the future of our apples, and the farmers who grow them. The OOF vision of celebrating organic apples includes live organic apple juicing with the Mobile Juice Factory and Old Meadows Farm, Summerhill's Chef Jesse inspired apple creations, an apple panel, apple art and much more!
2012 PROGRAMMING SCHEDULE
IN THE MUSIC TENT:
11:00 AM – Hon. Norm Letnick, B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Kelowna-Lake Country MLA.
Hon. Norm Letnick will open the festival with a proclamation to the Certified Organic Associations of BC recognizing Sept. 22-29, 2012 as “Organic Week in British Columbia”.
11:45 AM & 3:45 PM – Priscilla Judd
Priscilla Judd is a professional piano tuner but after an industrial orchard moved in next door, she became an activist songwriter. Priscilla now lives in an organic forest and she still tunes pianos.
12:00 PM – Kiki the Eco Elf
Kiki the Eco Elf is a magical Children's Entertainer from Vernon, British Columbia. She is an avid fan of the planet earth and is dedicated to teaching children about how to protect this amazing planet through engaging story-telling, interactive songs, and entertaining clowning/face painting.
2:00 PM - Raging Grannies
Raging Grannies are caring older women who use song to protest and raise awareness of the issues of Peace, the environment and social justice. Satirical and serious, they are politically conscious but non-partisan.
2:45 PM - Ari Neufeld
Ari Neufeld creates in the moment. Music is the strongest, most electric and far-reaching personifications of this ideal, in the consumable, public forum. So there is singing and instrument playing happening over the poetry, but – deeper – there is a celebration in the performer/audience relationship. Ari keeps up with his voice and guitar by playing drums with his legs through an amplified wooden box-half he found in his grandfather’s toolshed. His growth as an artist has been a journey of world-traveling and an array of honest experience, yielding an ever-flourishing deepening to the rendering, and a highly entertaining approach to folk music. Prepare to be disarmed!
4:00 PM – Urban Birds
The Urban Birds entertain with 3 piece fusion funk jazz ensembles. A very fun experience for all!
ON THE OBSERVATION DECK:
1:00 PM - COABC presents: The Apple Panel Discussion – NO GMO!
Join Okanagan orchardists and scientists as we host a panel discussion about the numerous threats posed by Okanagan Speciality Fruit’s CFIA application for the GMO non-browning apple. Come listen, learn and leave empowered with real information & action about the NO-GMO apple campaign!
IN THE MAKWALA KEKULI EARTH HOUSE
ALL DAY – Open Drumming Sessions & Wild Crafting Displays. No alcohol please.
IN THE SUMMERHILL GARDENS
3:00 PM – Biodynamic Demeter Status at Summerhill - Tour Summerhill Gardens with Gabe Cipes
