Outreach Programs in the Okanagan

The official registration of the Okanagan Greens Society took place in December 2007, with this development and commitment our community outreach programs will continue to thrive. Our society's purpose as incorporated: "Working together in our community for a healthy environment, happy people and a sustainable local economy."

As consciousness about climate change continues to grow, people will become proper stewards of our beautiful earth, learning how to manage their own ecology. Teaching about aiding our environment in every way possible, is a huge first step from which a great deal of momentum builds.

The Okanagan Valley community is demonstrating desire to implement more sustainability initiatives and as a society we are collaborating to direct this positive energy. The Okanagan Greens Society is building to be a lead organization for environmental and sustainable action in the Okanagan and will continue widening our team and focus.

As a society we have implemented the following programs:

  1. Production of the annual Organic Okanagan Festival.
  2. Distribution of the Ban Terminator Seed postcard campaign; in conjunction with Nature’s Fare Markets.
  3. Key sponsor and organizer of the mandatory GE food labeling “Food Warning” event with Greenpeace in Kelowna.
  4. Launching the pilot project of the Okanagan Greens - Local Food for Local Schools program by coordinating seed donation and worm castings to a class at Rutland Elementary School, for their plot in the Hartman Community Garden. Partnering with Sunshine Farms, we coordinated and sponsored Rose Valley Elementary School’s Kindergarten tour of Sunshine Farms, including seeds for all children and complete handouts on organic gardening.
  5. Gift sponsor for designated local and sustainable initiatives.
